June Important Dates: Swimming Lessons- 2nd and 3rd week of June Kindersley Field Trip- June 22
Hello grade 1 and 2 and families. Here is a quick overview of what we are doing this month: ELA: Our language arts materials will reflect current science and social studies units. Language arts will be divided into 6 sections, printing, word work (spelling and phonics,) independent reading, shared reading, story time, and writing time. Reading at home is a critical part of helping your student develop as a reader. Please take time everyday to do a bit of reading with your child. This is a great family activity that will improve your students' performance in school. Printing- Students will begin the day with their printing assignment. Emphasis is on creating neat and correctly formed letters. Word Work- Students will receive their spelling lists every Monday. Throughout the week we will practice our spelling words through different class activities. We will have a practice test on these words every Thursday and the test on Friday. Students who get 100% on their practice test do not have to do the test on Friday. We will also do other activities to build phonemic awareness throughout the week. Independent Reading- This is reading done by the child during class. Students are encouraged to choose reading materials that interest them that are at an appropriate level. As students read I will circulate throughout the room and monitor reading and comprehension skills. Shared Reading- Shared reading is done by grade level (grade ones will read together and grade two's will read together.) Students will read together with the teacher from readers and other selected material. Emphasis will be on reading strategies and comprehension. Story Time- This is done as a class. Every morning I will select a story to read that reflects what we are learning in Science of Social Studies. Discussion of story elements, patterns and repetition, vocabulary, and writers craft will follow or precede reading the story. There may also be activities related to the story. Writing Time- After Christmas students will also have free writing time. Students are asked to create original written works which will be "published." Emphasis is on developing ideas and editing work to create a final copy that they are proud of. Students will regularly share their finished and unfinished works with the class. Math: We are currently working on adding and subtracting. The grade 1's will be adding and subtracting with answers up to 20. The grade 2's will be working with numbers up to 100. Remember to practice at home with flashcards or problem solving activities. Science and Social Studies: Our last science unit will be on magnets. Health and Phys. Ed.: Mrs. Walz and I are sharing the teaching of Phys. Ed. and Health. In Phys. Ed. we will be working on team building and cooperative games. In Health we will be using a program called "Skills for Growing." Click Here for Course Outline: Pictures: Field Trip to Kindersley
